- What three pieces of kit would you never go to a show without?
What I would never go to a show without would have to be: my Beats headphones, because I like to relax myself before the classes and listen to music in a quiet place; Prosciutto because I need to eat at least one pack a day to satisfy my cravings - Prosciutto is my brain power; third of all, I just couldn’t do without my KEP Italia helmet! Safety first!!!!
- What are your three top tips for travelling and getting horses to shows?
When the horses travel I like to go with them if I can, sometimes when they go on the plane I send my show groom with them in case anything happens; I know I can trust my groom to do what she needs to do. My only tips for travelling is to take your time, never be in a rush, especially if you’re going a long way. For example when I go to Italy we stop for two or sometimes three nights and go slowly with plenty of breaks for the horses.
- What three things would you advise competitors to do in the warm-up/ collecting ring?
In the collecting ring I would recommend that you go in early on enough to let you and your horse take some time to relax, have a slow warm up and keep everything smooth. Before I go into the ring I readjust my saddle and for luck I take all the boots off and put them back on... I don’t know why but its something I’ve done since I was on ponies. Finally, keep breathing!!!
- What word or words of advice would you give to competitors who feel their nerves getting the better of them before a class?
I think when you feel nervous it is a great thing as long as you channel those nerves into something positive. I believe it shows that you really care and want to do well so I would say when you feel like that take some deep breaths and try and turn it into a positive energy and it will turn into adrenalin.
- Do you have any superstitions when competing or “lucky” items?
I personally am not superstitious but my sister was born on Friday 13th so she believes she has the power to curse people; I never want to get on the wrong side of her or she might make me have fences down or fall off!! She can also tell when I’m going to do well and she is normally right.
- What has been the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst competing?
The funniest thing that’s happened to me showjumping is probably when I landed in a water tray. I have the funniest photo with my legs in the air landing in it… [We wonder if anyone caught the moment on camera?!]
- Can you share a “secret Yazmin” special tip with us (this can be anything you like)?
A secret Yazmin tip... that’s hard. Everyone is different and we deal with situations very differently. I am very well known for eating a full meal just before a grand prix and constantly laughing until I step into the ring. The way I concentrate is not normal, people think I am not serious sometimes but it is just my way of hiding my nerves... So I suppose if someone out there is super nervous... maybe have a roast dinner!!!!
With huge thanks to Yazmin Pinchen for taking the time to share some great material with us! We hope you enjoyed the read and join us in wishing her a stellar year ahead!
